Beethoven – Grosse Fuge, op. 133 (1826)
Past and present are in active dialogue in this afternoon featuring one of Haydn’s late masterpieces, before the clarity of the Enlightenment gives way to the microscopic intensity of Webern and the meditative stillness of Kurtág, who reaches back five centuries to find modern resonance. Schnittke’s Third Quartet (1983) summons Renaissance music and Beethoven’s epic Grosse Fuge, which closes this program.
